Ruins, Castles and Churches
Many magnificent buildings of former monarchs are nowadays being utilized as museums, hotels or locations for cultural events. Others can only be gazed at from the outside or be discovered as a romantic ruin amid the nature. But also the "Altenberger Dom" in Odenthal is an admirable historical sight. Well known as the "little brother of the Kölner Dom" its biggest stained-glass church window north of the Alps has been fascinating visitors from all over the world Furthermore you can visit the small, colourful "Bonten Kerken" in the eastern area of the "Naturarena" and be captivated by their rural charm. |

Historical Region
Discover the history and the way of life in the "Naturarena Bergisches Land" and experience industrial heritage, ancient handcrafts and the "bergisches" everyday life in former times. In many museums you can even experience the past at first hand and try several workings yourself. Historical (hammer) mills can be found alongside many streams and rivers and are still vivid evidence of the intensive use of waterpower in former times. Additionally, traces of the ancient mining industry can be discovered in museums as well as on guided tours offered by several old mines.
You can discover even more customs and traditions of the area if you visit one of the numerous festivals and village fairs, such as the "Rheinischer Karneval" during the month of February or one of the little romantic Christmas Markets in December.
